Types Of Therapy

Help is at hand for many every day issues.

In psychology and counselling there are many types of therapy approaches that can be used.

Counselling and psychotherapy are professional activities or approaches that are designed to help enable the client to develop understanding about themselves and make changes in their lives.

Below you will find a brief description of some of the types of therapy approaches we use at Guidelight Psychology. You can read down, or jump to the one that interests you.

What types of Counselling and Psychotherapy do we offer?

Coaching

Coaching is a solution focused and results orientated process where the coach facilitates and supports the client to enhance their life experience and personal growth through working towards their desired goals and objectives.  Coaching is a short term activity that relies on the client setting goals and implementing an action plan to achieve them.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Therapy is a collaborative, goal centred and time limited approach to dealing with problems such as depression, anxiety, social phobia's, panic attacks and anxiety.  It is a therapeutic and educative process that helps people understand how their dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs about themselves and the world affect their emotional and mental wellbeing.

Counselling

Counselling is a process that focuses on enhancing the psychological well-being of people so they are able to reach their full potential. In this manner a counsellor supports personal growth, development, and self-understanding in people which helps them adapt more constructive life practices often in specific problem areas.  These areas can include relationships, grief and loss, stress and emotional distress, health and wellbeing and work issues.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

Interpersonal psychotherapy is a time limited and goal centred approach that focuses on developing interpersonal relationships as a way of bringing about change.  By improving relationships, changing expectations of them or increasing social support networks people can alleviate the symptoms of issues relating to grief, role and life transitions and interpersonal disputes.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a collaborative and long term approach based on self knowledge and insight.  It's used to help the client understand that unconscious internal dynamics like emotion, thinking and behaviour are often at play when internal and interpersonal conflict and distress arises.  The therapist helps the client to become aware of these unconscious patterns, explore and understand how they effect their wellbeing and how to manage them effectively.

Schema Therapy

Schema therapy combines a variety of approaches including Cognitive therapy and psychoanalytic therapy that helps people to find constructive ways to meet their emotional needs based on the principle that we develop early life experiences and beliefs or worldviews (schema's) that prevent us from having our emotional needs met.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Solution focused therapy is a short term brief methodology that encourages people to alter their patterns and  behaviour around difficult situations so they become unstuck and build their own resources to find a solution.  The methodology focuses on what is working or has worked in the past rather than the problem and is future focused rather than dwelling on the past.

Somatic or Body Oriented Psychotherapy

Somatic or body oriented psychotherapy is grounded in the belief that thought, emotion and bodily experience are understood as inter-functioning aspects of the persons whole being or bodymind. This approach facilitates the exploration and expression of the person, to develop self awareness, self regulation and a sense of vitality and aliveness. This work deepens a sense of connection to oneself and to others thus facilitating deeper relationships with self and other and helping to manage emotional, mental and physical wellbeing.
