Positive Psychology Groups for the LGBTQIAP+ Community

At Guidelight Psychology Gold Coast, we run FREE positive psychology groups for members of the LGBT community.

Do you identify as LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual or other - often shortened to just LGBT)? Do you live on the Gold Coast?

Would you like to join a FREE group to help you focus on the qualities and strengths, that you bring to your relationships, family, workplace, and community?

Then keep reading!

If you identify as a member of the LGBT community, you have probably already experienced plenty of negativity in relation to your sexuality. Just take a look at some of the things that are being said as part of the same sex marriage debate.

Sometimes it can seem like the world is against you - a sea of negativity everywhere you look.

The field of psychology has been guilty of this over the years. For a long time, it focused only on psychopathology - that is, all the things that go wrong, even if it was in the attempt to alleviate the suffering, dis-ease and disorder in individuals and communities. But still ...

How is Positive Psychology Different?

Positive psychology on the other hand, concentrates on the strengths, and what is working well in an individual or community - and then looks at how these can be harnessed to enhance and improve life.

Guidelight Psychology, in conjunction with Headspace, is currently hosting FREE positive psychology groups for members of the LGBT community, at our Southport office.

While there are certainly challenges associated with being a member of the LGBT community, these groups focus on helping you to build on the positives, many of which have likely come out of your experiences. For example, according to research, LGBT people:

  • develop empathy and compassion for others;

  • are free of restrictive gender roles (for example, same sex couples are better at dividing up the household chores);

  • tend to be more involved in social justice and activism;

  • often build strong social supports and a sense of community.
