Relationship Counselling for Singles
There is a bit of a misunderstanding in the general community, about the term “relationship counselling” - which is why many don't understand the concept of relationship counselling for singles.
The myth is that it's only relevant for people “in” a relationship, and so the terms “relationship counselling” and “couples counselling” tend to be used interchangeably – however, there is a difference.
What is Relationship Counselling?
Contrary to popular opinion, relationship counselling is not limited to groups of two or more people. It can be of benefit to individuals too!
At our Gold Coast psychologist centre, we often provide relationship counselling for singles. These sessions may be centred around preparing them for a future intimate relationship or recovering from a breakup, as well as learning to love themselves and their life, even when they are not currently in a romantic relationship.
In relationship counselling sessions for singles, we might explore topics such as:
- What do you want or need from a potential partner?
- Do you seem to be repeating similar negative patterns in your relationships?
- How do you handle conflict?
- Do you value yourself, and what you have to offer a potential partner? (Self love is the most powerful love, after all!)
- How might your childhood experiences be affecting your ability to sustain a romantic attachment today?
- Do you take things too fast - or do you have commitment issues?
- Do you have realistic expectations of what a relationship might bring?
- Could you be suffering from the self-sabotage syndrome?
- And - how to enjoy being single when it feels like the whole world is coupled up, except for you!
If you are single, the counselling office is a wonderful, safe place to openly explore your deeper feelings about relationships. There is no pressure to be in a relationship; rather, it's about improving your relationship with yourself - and therefore, with others - including friends, family and colleagues, not just your romantic partner.
So if you aren't currently part of a couple - it’s okay – you can still benefit from relationship counselling!
