What is Positive Psychology and Wellbeing anyway?!
For most of the last century, the field of psychology has primarily concentrated on “fixing what is broken” – depression, anxiety, trauma, stress and the like.
And while this is still important, in recent years there has been a rising interest in how psychology can help us enhance our lives as well.
No longer is it just about helping those in distress, but it is also about guiding us to flourish, thrive, and reach our full potential in every area of our lives.
This movement is called “positive psychology”.
Do We Only See a Doctor When We're Sick?!
It might help to think of it this way:
- Do we only see a doctor when we are sick?
- Or the dentist when we have a tooth ache?
- Or make an appointment at the optometrist when we are having problems with our eyesight?
The answer of course, is no!
Seeking medical help only when we are experiencing pain and distress, means we are missing out on much of what these health professionals can offer.
While problems definitely motivate us to make an appointment, the truth is most of us see our doctor, dentist and optometrist even when we our bodies don’t need fixing – because we know that even when we are well, they can help us keep our bodies in good condition so we can get the most out of life.
A Psychologist can help you become a Well Being!
And it’s the same with the psychology profession.
Instead of only seeing a psychologist when we are in distress, as a society are finally recognising that they can also help us even when we are psychologically well. They can help us with things like increasing our mental strength; goal setting and perseverance; and improving our relationships.
This comparatively new branch of psychology gained global recognition in 1998, Martin Seligman (the President of the American Psychological Association) decreed that positive psychology and wellbeing would be the theme of his time in office.
Since then, much research has been done, so don't write it off as just some "airy-fairy, feel-good, positive-thinking hype".
Rather, positive psychology is backed by an ever-growing database of hard evidence, science and research - and your local psychologist can equip you with proven tools and strategies, to help you live your best life!
